WASHOUGAL — Residents will start moving into The Walden in downtown Washougal on Jan. 9. The new six-story building features 46 studio, one- and two-bedroom apartments with ground-level retail space.

“I’m just ready to showcase Washougal and what Washougal has to offer,” said DaShon Stevenson, a community manager for CloudTen, the Reno, Nev.-based property management company that will operate The Walden.

According to the website, apartments at The Walden will lease for $1,675 a month for a 565-square-foot studio apartment with a 1,570-square-foot, two-bedroom, two-bathroom “summit suite” going for $4,200 a month on the high end.

Portland-based Walsh Construction built The Walden, 1625 Main St., in 2024. The mixed-use development is next to the property planned for a new Washougal library and across from the city of Washougal’s town center project.

“I would say at least two showings a week,” Stevenson said, adding the building is garnering attention from older Washougal residents who are ready to downsize but don’t want to leave their community.

“People are stoked about it,” Stevenson said. “The homeowners on the hills (have nice views) … but they don’t need a 6,500-square-foot home for just the two of them and their dog.”

The Walden offers controlled access for mail and packages, a parking system that uses fobs and phone apps, a co-working lounge, on-site conferencing, electric vehicle charging stations, an art gallery, bicycle parking, a fire pit and a barbecue.

Apartments include high-end appliances, separate heating and cooling systems, smart thermostats, balconies, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and private terraces.

Stevenson said the building owners are attempting to earn a Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design Gold certification, awarded to efficient and “green” buildings that offer environmental benefits.

“Developers have a hard time getting permission to build here because of Washougal regulations with the environment — I love that about the city,” he said. “It’s a good duality. We’ll be sustainable and energy efficient.”

The approximately 1,200 square feet of retail space on the building’s first floor will likely end up being a restaurant or coffee shop, but Stevenson said the owners are open to a variety of commercial uses.

“Even if one doesn’t wake up to mountain views, they can wake up with their morning cup of coffee,” Stevenson said. “I wish I could experience at least one sunrise up here. The photos, they’ll be literally Hallmark-type.”
