A 5-year-old boy suffered life-threatening injuries when he was struck by a car Thursday afternoon in a central Vancouver apartment complex parking lot.

Vancouver police responded about 3:30 p.m. to reports that a child had been hit by a car in the parking lot of the Townhouse Square Apartments at 8701 E. Mill Plain Blvd. in central Vancouver. Authorities took the child to an area hospital, according to a police news release.

Officers said the driver told them he was driving through the parking lot when he felt his rear tire run over something. He stopped and saw the child on the ground with his bike, the agency said.

Police said it appeared the child was riding his bike between two parked cars before entering the roadway. The child was not wearing a helmet.

The driver, whose identity was not released, cooperated with officers. Investigators said they don’t believe speed or impairment were factors in the crash.

The police department’s traffic unit is continuing to investigate.
