Letter: Jan. 6 a sad day in history

Excuse me for saying this if your birthday lands on Dec. 7, Sept. 11 or Jan. 6, as you should celebrate your day. But these days do leave terribly sad memories in United States history for me and others.

I am writing on Jan. 6 because Donald Trump should have been ineligible to run for president, according to the third section of the 14th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Four years ago, Republican House leader Kevin McCarthy and Senate Leader Mitch McConnell said that Trump bore total responsibility for fomenting an attack to destroy our government because he lost the 2020 election and he wanted the counting proceedings stopped.

At that time, he ignored his presidential oath to protect and defend the U.S. He ignored pleas to call off all the so-called rioters who were a part of the coup going after Speaker Nancy Pelosi and wanted to hang Vice President Mike Pence. And now, instead of owning up to the truth, Speaker Mike Johnson wants to go after the commission that investigated the findings, as Republicans are trying to erase videos that any of these events occurred. Another reason to save books.
