VANCOUVER — The Foundation for Vancouver Public Schools has launched a monthly giving program, Shoebox Society, for planned and legacy giving to make a positive and lasting impact on future generations.
In 1988, district Superintendent Jim Parsley learned of a student who didn’t have access to an adequate pair of shoes for walking to school each day. Parsley purchased a pair of shoes for the student. This small act of compassion inspired fellow educators to contribute in similar ways. So they began collecting money in a shoebox to support students when needs arose. It soon became a foundation. Over the years, it has touched the lives of hundreds, if not thousands, of students and families, offering hope, support, and opportunities for a brighter future.
Waste Connections has joined with a handful of anonymous donors to ensure the Shoebox Society’s first members have their first year of donations doubled, up to a $5,000. Additionally, McCord’s Vancouver Toyota has signed on as a shoe sponsor. That means for every member of the Shoebox Society, McCord’s will donate a pair of shoes to a VPS student.
