Letter: Addicted to government

Bill Kelley’s letter (“Ronald Reagan’s swamp,” Jan. 7) has taken us back to 1980 to blame today’s ills on Ronald Reagan. Perhaps we should re-evaluate the role of government in our lives. I would suggest setting the Time Machine dial earlier. The founders drafted a Constitution that limited governments’ powers and responsibilities. Our next stop could be 1933, when FDR redefined the scope of the Constitution with the New Deal. We can stop in 1964, when LBJ increased government involvement with his “Great Society.” Programs put in place have increased our dependency on big government, and the funds to pay for them always come from the other guy. Government spending is unbridled, with a $33 trillion national debt. We have become a society addicted to government intervention that our children will have to pay for in the future.

We encourage readers to express their views about public issues. Letters to the editor are subject to editing for brevity and clarity. Limit letters to 200 words (100 words if endorsing or opposing a political candidate or ballot measure) and allow 30 days between submissions. Send Us a Letter
