Letter: Standing with Harris

With clarity and dignity in the Capitol chamber, Kamala Harris read off the electoral votes for Donald Trump and then for herself. To her left, Mike Johnson rose and applauded for Trump’s number, but coldly sat against Harris’ without applauding. He could have stood with her. He should have. She presided over a peaceful transition of power, something Trump did not do. But more, she’s a good and brilliant person who came close, despite difficult odds, to becoming our first woman president.

Johnson could have stood with Harris. He did not, because he’s too small. Every senator and representative should have stood and given her an ovation. How decent that would have been. How refreshing. How unifying. How impressive for the world to witness. But it did not happen, because there are too many small people, too many partisan people, too many self-serving people, too many divisive people, in Trump’s and Johnson’s party. And that is how they chose to begin 2025.
