Last weekend, Jaydia Martin’s memory lane was paved with hardwood.
The former Hudson’s Bay High School basketball star returned to Cheney for the first time since transferring from Eastern Washington to Sacramento State.
As she has often this season, Martin set the scoring pace with 23 points in a 89-80 loss Saturday. The senior forward leads the Hornets in scoring at 14.4 points per game and is second on the team with 4.6 rebounds per game.
Martin, who played three seasons at Eastern Washington, was named Big Sky Conference freshman of the year in 2021. Last season, she appeared in 33 of 34 games as the Eagles finished 29-6, won the Big Sky title and reached the NCAA tournament.
At Hudson’s Bay, Martin was a two-time Class 2A Greater St. Helens league MVP and led the Eagles to the league title as a senior.
Martin isn’t the only player from Vancouver in Sacramento State’s starting lineup. Heritage alumna Katie Peneueta is averaging 8.5 points and 4.4 rebounds per game.
A senior, Peneueta returned to Sacramento State after playing last season at NC State. She played in seven games and, though injured, joined her team’s run to the Final Four.
Sacramento State is 8-8 this season after finishing 6-25 last season.
