I listened to Donald Trump’s Jan. 7 speech, and I hate to be such a doomsday-crier, but it feels like, as of Jan. 20, we can place a headstone on the grave of American democracy. It started slowly in 1980, with the organized effort of conservatives to replace our democracy with an authoritarian oligarchy. This year, they appear to have succeeded with the election of Trump and Elon Musk’s ownership of Trump. I hope that I can eat my words if I am wrong, but we will not know until his first two years in the White House are done.
