Five different Portland Winterhawks scored goals in a 5-2 Western Hockey League victory at Moose Jaw on Friday. It was a rematch of the 2024 WHL championship, but with a far different result.
Alex Weiermair was given the first star of the game with a goal and assist. His ninth goal of the season coming in the second period was scored as the game-winner.
Second star went Tyson Jugnauth with two assists that included his 100th career WHL point.
After the Warriors scored the opening goal, Portland’s Joel Plante and Kayd Ruedig each netted their third goals of the season for a 2-1 Winterhawks lead at the end of the first period.
Moose Jaw’s Casey Brown scored his first WHL goal in the second period to tie things up at 2-2.
The Winterhawks went back in front at 9:46 of the second on Weiermair’s goal with assists going to Jordan Duguay and Kyle Chyzowski, who was playing in his 250th WHL game.
Less than a minute later, Kyle McDonough extended the lead with a long-range to give Portland an insurance goal.
Hudson Darby had the final goal, coming in the third period. Jugnauth and Ruedig were given assists. It was Ruedig’s second multi-point game.
After winning their first WHL title last season by beating the Winterhawks in a four-game sweep, the Warriors (10-26-4-2) are mired in last place with a WHL-worst 26 points.
