Girls Basketball Roundup: Woodland rallies for key win over Mark Morris

Lainey Haden hits seven 3-pointers; Beavers overcome 12-point deficit in fourth

Trailing by 12 points in the fourth quarter on the road, Woodland girls basketball was more than tested on Tuesday.

The Beavers passed with flying colors.

Woodland rallied for a 61-54 win over Mark Morris to take firm control of second place in the Class 2A Greater St. Helens League.

Mark Morris focused its defense on Kennedy Bockert, who entered Tuesday as the 2A GSHL’s leading scorer at 22.4 points per game. The Woodland sophomore was held to 11 points.

But it was Lainey Haden to the rescue. The senior guard scored 23 points, hitting seven 3-pointers.

Two of those came in the fourth quarter, as Woodland outscored Mark Morris 23-6.

Woodland (12-4, 8-1) now leads third-place Mark Morris by two games and has swept the season series against the Monarchs.

Reese Johnston scored 17 points and Kialani Makaiwi added 12 points for Mark Morris (10-5, 6-3).

2A Greater St. Helens League

COLUMBIA RIVER 44, RIDGEFIELD 38 — Gracie Glavin scored all of her 14 points in the first half as the Rapids stayed undefeated in the 2A GSHL with the win at Ridgefield.

The two teams played an even second half — both scoring 16 points — with Ridgefield making a fourth-quarter charge that came up a bit short. River (14-1, 9-0 2A GSHL) had a 12-4 advantage in the third quarter with the Spudders (4-11, 4-5) having the same scoring advantage in the fourth.

Ridgefield’s Sava Chanda scored a game-high 15 points.

WASHOUGAL 52, R.A. LONG 43 — Riley Vaughan scored 20 points as Washougal girls basketball pulled away for a win in Longview.

Ahead 39-38 after three quarters, the Panthers clamped down on defense. Jenna Klopman went 3 for 4 at the foul line in the fourth quarter and finished with 13 points.

The win moves Washougal (5-8, 4-5) into a fourth-place tie with Ridgefield in the 2A GSHL.

Alauna Brown and Briana Garwood each scored 14 points for R.A. Long (5-9, 3-6).

HOCKINSON 57, HUDSON’S BAY 11 — Lyla Taylor and Charlotte Newton each scored 13 points as the Hawks earned a road win.

Yasmine Ugalde and Dannika Grant each added 11 points for Hockinson (2-12, 2-7).
Amber Fellows and Madison Durant each scored four points for Hudson’s Bay (0-13, 0-9).

1A Trico League

KALAMA 53, COLUMBIA-WHITE SALMON 43, OT — Hannah Johnson scored 15 of her 22 points in the fourth quarter and overtime as the Chinooks earned a key win at home.

Trailing 32-20 entering the fourth, Columbia-White Salmon rallied and led by three points with one minute left in regulation. Halle Kock scored seven of her 19 points in overtime.

Kalama (8-6, 6-3) moved into a third-place tie with Columbia (9-5, 6-3). The teams split their two games against each other.

SETON CATHOLIC 66, LA CENTER 23 — The Cougars remained perfect in league play with a lopsided win on the road.

Remy Jenniges scored 13 points and Adyson Maddock added 10 points for Seton Catholic (9-6, 9-0).

Paige Sherry scored nine points for La Center (6-9, 3-6).

KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 52, CASTLE ROCK 39 — Addison Bagley had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead the Knights to a home win.

Bridget Quinn added 11 points and 11 rebounds for King’s Way (10-3, 7-2).

The Knights started fast, outscoring Castle Rock 14-5 in the first quarter.

Sophia Buchanan scored 12 points, all on 3-pointers, for the Rockets (6-9, 3-6).

STEVENSON 53, FORT VANCOUVER 14 — Aria Obias scored 19 points, including five 3-pointers, as the Bulldogs earned a home win.

Dani Wallace added 16 points Rececca Townsend had 13 points for Stevenson (3-11, 2-7).

Azul Martinez Jimenez had five points to lead Fort Vancouver (1-14, 0-9).
