Carson Morningstar scored 30 points as Prairie boys basketball held off Evergreen 67-65 on Wednesday.
One game after dropping a 66-65 heartbreaker to 3A Greater St. Helens League leader Mountain View, the Falcons kept the pressure on. Prairie (9-6, 3-1) has won six of its last seven games overall.
Morningstar scored 10 of Prairie’s 19 points in the third quarter. The Falcons opened a 50-41 lead headed into the fourth after the game was tied 31-31 at halftime.
The leading scorer in the 3A GSHL, Morningstar is now averaging 25.0 points per game.
Kai Speer hit two 3-pointers early in the fourth quarter as host Evergreen (4-12, 0-4) cut into Prairie’s lead. Speer finished with 15 points and Dez Daniel led the Plainsmen with 16 points.
Camas-Union doubleheader postponed
A mechanical issue forced the postponement of Wednesday’s girls and boys basketball doubleheader between Union and Camas.
A cable used to lower one of the baskets at Union High School snapped earlier in the day.
The doubleheader has been rescheduled for Thursday, Jan. 30 at Union High. The teams will then play their regularly-scheduled third 4A GSHL games against each other the following day at Camas.
Union and Camas girls entered Wednesday ranked No. 4 and 6, respectively in the WIAA’s Class 4A RPI rankings. Camas won the first game between the rivals 71-69 on Jan. 10.
Camas boys are ranked No. 3 in the RPI rankings and topped Union 60-48 on Jan. 10.
Boys Basketball
COLUMBIA RIVER 76, RIDGEFIELD 45 — Aaron Hoey scored 21 points, Ari Richardson added 15 points and the Rapids stayed atop the 2A GSHL with a convincing home win.
Columbia River (13-2, 8-1) extended its win streak to seven. The Rapids put the game away in the third quarter, outscoring Ridgefield 21-11 to lead 57-37.
Jamison McCann scored 20 points and Jack Hughes added 15 points for Ridgefield (10-5, 6-3).
HERITAGE 52, KELSO 43 — The Timberwolves improved to 2-2 in 3A GSHL with their road win over the Hilanders behind 13 points from Brooke Greenwald and 10 from Tyrell Cash.
Greenwald had 11 of his team-high in points in the second half, including eight of Heritage’s 18 third-quarter points.
Triton Hagdahl-Daniel led Kelso with nine points.
SETON CATHOLIC 66, LA CENTER 60 — Kaiden Wilson scored a game-high 30 points and the Cougars were able to hold off La Center and remain unbeaten in 1A Trico League play.
Brady Angelo added 13 points for Seton (9-5, 8-0). He was 4 for 4 from the free-throw line in the fourth quarter.
La Center (9-6, 5-4) had an 18-11 lead after the first quarter, and Seton responded by outscoring the Wildcats 34-22 over the second and third periods.
Zayne Latham led the Wildcats in scoring with 17 points.
KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 61, CASTLE ROCK 31 — The Knights erupted for 24 second-quarter points on their way to a 1A Trico League road win.
King’s Way outscored Castle Rock 24-2 in the second quarter on their way to a 38-10 halftime lead.
Patrick Carney led the Knights with a team-best 16 points, including 12 during the Knights’ second-quarter run. Radley Matson-Blighton added 15 and Jackson Lovato chipped in 10.
MARK MORRIS 55, WOODLAND 24 — Dalton Stevens’ game-high 20 points paced the Monarchs, who won their third straight to keep pace in a tight 2A GSHL league-title chase.
Mark Morris (7-2) won for the eighth time in nine games and remains one game back of R.A. Long and Columbia River, co-leaders of the 2A GSHL at 8-1 in league.
Drew Ibarreta added 11 for the Monarchs.
Jackson Gabbard led Woodland with seven points.
FORT VANCOUVER 84, STEVENSON 47 — A 23-point first quarter set the tone for the Trappers in their 1A Trico League home win.
Isaiah Barajas led Fort with a game-high 16 points, including four 3-pointers. As a team, the Trappers hit 15 3s.
Josiah Jointer added 14 for Fort.
HUDSON’S BAY 65, HOCKINSON 60 — The Eagles scored a season high in points to earn their first win of the season.
Girls basketball
KELSO 57, HERITAGE 31 — Peyton Champagne poured in a game-high 21 points and Bregan Ruhland added 15 in the Hilanders’ 3A GSHL road win to improve to 2-2 in league play.
Champagne had four of Kelso’s five 3-pointers. She and Ruhland combined for 14 of the team’s 21 fourth-quarter points.
Jaila Ellis had 19 to lead Heritage, including all 14 of the team’s third-quarter points. Caylin Iven added 11.
Stars of the day
Aeryn Noble, Evergreen girls bowling, rolled 188-191 for the highest score in a 1746-1457 win over Prairie.
Brooklyn Burnett, Columbia River girls bowling, rolled 189-159 for the highest score in a 1806-1753 win over Ridgefield.
Cole Milkowski, Skyview boys swimming, won the 200 IM, the 100 Free and was on the winning 200 Free and 400 Free relay teams as the Storm won a meet with Mark Morris and R.A. Long.
