Prep Roundup (Jan. 24): R.A. Long boys take control of 2A GSHL with 48-42 win over Columbia River

The 2A Greater St. Helens League boys basketball title race took another turn Friday when R.A. Long knocked off Columbia River 48-42 at home.

In a rematch of a Dec. 17 game won by the Rapids on their home floor, the Lumberjacks prevailed in Longview after Cameron Newsome hit four clutch free throws inside the final minute and River missed a game-tying 3-point attempt with 20 seconds left.

R.A. Long led by as many as 14 points in the third quarter, but River countered with a 14-2 run and trailed 38-33 entering the fourth.

Tied at 40-40 with two minutes left, Rhet Young’s go-ahead jump hook gave the Lumberjacks the lead for good.

Luca Phillips scored 11 points to lead the Rapids.

The win moved R.A. Long (15-1, 9-1) into sole possession of first place in the league standings with four games left. River (13-3, 8-2) and Mark Morris (15-2, 8-2) are tied for second place with a showdown looming on Jan. 29 at Columbia River.

Also in Longview, Mark Morris earned a come-from-behind 73-61 win over Ridgefield at home.

Behind Jamison McCann’s 21 points in the first half, the Spudders jumped out to a 40-33 halftime lead. But the Monarchs pushed back in the third quarter to tie the game entering the final quarter, then outscored the Spudders 22-10 in the fourth.

Dalton Stevens led Mark Morris with 33 points, and Drew Ibaretta scored a career-high 23 points.

McCann scored 28 points, and Jack Hughes added 15 points for the Spudders (10-6, 6-4).

Boys Basketball

CAMAS 64, SKYVIEW 50 — The Papermakers won their fourth straight to open 4A GSHL play and second against the Storm this season.

Ethan Harris scored a game-high 19 points, including three 3-pointers in the first half, helping the Papermakers jump out to a 36-27 lead.

Jace VanVoorhis poured in 14 points, Cade Washington collected 13 points and Nyima Namru added 11 points.

Malakai Weimer scored 18 points to lead Skyview.

UNION 71, BATTLE GROUND 37 — The Titans set a new season high in points scored and improved to 3-1 in 4A GSHL play.

Led by Pat Howe’s 14 points, Union did most of its damage in the paint and mid-range with all but three of its 27 field goals scored inside the 3-point line.

Daniel Kirichenko added 13 points, while Drew Hill and Nick Burchett each chipped in 12 points.

James Gill scored 15 points to lead Battle Ground, which fell to 0-5 in the 4A GSHL.

HERITAGE 50, MOUNTAIN VIEW 48 — Trailing by three at halftime, the Timberwolves swung momentum with a 16-6 third quarter to hand the Thunder their first league loss.

Heritage’s Tyrell Cash poured in a game-high 16 points, while Jose Zacarias (13 points) and Richard Burns (10 points) also reached double figures in scoring.

Jack Fournier posted a team-high 12 points for Mountain View, which saw a five-game winning streak snapped.

PRAIRIE 82, KELSO 70 — The Falcons jumped out a 32-13 lead in the first quarter and held up the fast start to move to 4-1 in league play.

Carson Morningstar and Malachi Patton each had double-doubles in the Falcons’ wire-to-wire win. Moringstar had 27 points and 13 rebounds, while Patton posted 26 points and 11 assists, including 15 points in the opening quarter.

Triton Hagdahl-Daniel led the Hilanders with 16 points. Kelso fell to 1-4 in league play.

WASHOUGAL 58, HUDSON’S BAY 38 — Four Panthers reached double figures in scoring en route to a 2A GSHL road win.

Alex Frost scored 18 points to lead Washougal. Coleman Multanen and Jackson Multanen added 12 and 11 points, respectively, and Dylan Gibson scored 10 points.

The Eagles were led by Jaxon Novotny’s 14 points, and Kelden Carney added 13 points.

HOCKINSON 62, WOODLAND 55 — Kyle Alexander scored a game-high 18 points as the Hawks prevailed on the road over the Beavers.

Oliver Garner and Ethan Wall chipped in 13 and 10 points, respectively.

Dyrian McPoland led Woodland with 15 points and Jackson Gabbard added 13 points.

FORT VANCOUVER 61, KALAMA 54 (OT) — Josiah Jointer scored nine points in overtime to push the Trappers over the top for a key Trico League road win.

Jointer, who led Fort Vancouver with 19 points, made two 3-pointers and three free throws in the extra period, during which the Trappers outscored the Chinooks 13-6.

Leighton Livengood added 17 points and Isaiah Barajas scored 16 points for the Trappers.

Abel Koski led Kalama with 14 points.

KING’S WAY CHRISTIAN 69, STEVENSON 38 The Knights caught fire during a 22-3 second quarter and cruised to a Trico League road win.

Jackson Lovato’s 21 points led all scorers, with Patrick Carney adding 16 points and Radley Matson-Blighton scoring 11 points for the Knights.

Jude Travinski scored 12 points to lead the Bulldogs, who hit eight 3-pointers in the game.

Girls Basketball

CAMAS 72, SKYVIEW 46 — Five Camas players combined to hit 15 3-pointers during a hot-shooting night at home.

Led by Sophie Buzzard’s 18 points, which included five 3-pointers, Camas got a balanced scoring effort from the likes of Lauren Hood (15 points), Baylie Farra (14 points) and Keirra Thompson (10 points), who also added eight assists.

Farra hit four 3-pointers and Eli Gibson added three shots from deep for nine points.

Lainey Phillips posted a double-double of 16 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Storm. Cameron Watson added 10 points and seven rebounds.

KELSO 70, PRAIRIE 66 — The Hilanders came back from down six points entering the fourth quarter and held off a short-handed Falcons squad at home.

Peyton Champagne hit all six of Kelso’s 3-pointers for a team-high 22 points and Hayden Johnson scored eight of her 20 points in the fourth quarter.

Prairie, which played only seven players, drilled seven 3-pointers in the first half and led 39-36 at halftime. Harmony Fallin posted a team-high 22 points and Gabriella Kay-Corrales 15 points, including four 3-pointers.

MOUNTAIN VIEW 64, HERITAGE 20 — The first-place Thunder (11-6, 5-0) began the second half of 3A GSHL play by holding the Timberwolves (5-12, 0-5) to their lowest point total of the season.

Sveva Bernasconi was one of three Thunder players to reach double figures with a game-high 19 points. She had 14 in the first half as Mountain View led at halftime, 32-9. Camaria Brown added 15 and Ashlee Heer had 11 for the Thunder.

Jaila Ellis led Heritage with 14 points.
