The Union boys basketball team used an 18-8 third-quarter run to put Skyview in a hole they couldn’t get out of in Monday’s 54-50 victory at Union High School.

The Titans (13-4, 3-2) moved into second place in the 4A Greater St. Helens League, two games behind first-place Camas with a pair of games against the Papermakers coming up on Thursday and Friday.

Pat Howe scored eight of his 17 points to help Union surge ahead in the third quarter after leading 28-24 at halftime.

Union’s Nick Burchett had 11 of his 15 points in the first half.

Skyview (12-6, 3-3) tried to rally in the fourth quarter by outscoring the Titans by the same 18-8 advantage Union had just put on the Storm.

Malakai Weimer, who led all scorers with 22 points, and Gavin Packer combined for 15 of the Storm’s 18 points in the final quarter where Skyview was 8 for 8 from the free-throw line and made a late 3-pointer to get within five.

“We didn’t match their intensity until the fourth quarter and at that point we had dug too big of a hole,” Skyview coach Matt Gruhler said. “Malakai Weimer led the charge and was super active on both ends of the floor.

“But we didn’t make enough plays and made too many mistakes in the third quarter.”

CAMAS 84, BATTLE GROUND 34 — The Papermakers jumped out to a big first-quarter advantage and didn’t look back in winning the 4A GSHL game.

Ethan Harris added 11 points for first-place Camas (14-3, 5-0).

Collin McGowan led Battle Ground (3-15, 0-6) in scoring with eight points.

PRAIRIE 73, TUMWATER 54 — After trailing 19-15 after the first quarter, the Falcons pulled away with a 24-2 second quarter for the non-league victory over visiting Tumwater (11-5).

The Falcons (11-6) improved to 7-0 on their home floor with their third win in a row.

Carson Morningstar led Prairie in scoring with 19 points, and Malachi Patton and Ben Nkansah each scored 15 points.
