Letter: Authoritarian threat becomes real

The majority of us are feeling depressed, anxious and bewildered by the actions taken by President Donald Trump and Elon Musk in their first month of systematically dismantling our federal government. But it is slightly amusing to read about those who have the courage to admit that they voted for this authoritarian threat and woefully regret it.

The prices of groceries that were supposed to be fixed on day one; growing inflation; tariffs; First Amendment attacks; weakening of labor protections; and unilateral cuts to Social Security, Medicaid, Medicare, Veterans Affairs and the Department of Agriculture are starting to affect them directly. That stuff was meant for the “other guy.”

Trump’s first-term inaction, impeachments, felony convictions and overall incompetence painted a clear picture of who he is, yet it didn’t register. Now these folks are wondering how this could be happening. It’s simple: If his mouth is moving, he’s lying.

Trump had four years after losing to devise his destructive agenda and elevate run-amok Musk as the proxy president to execute it for him. I’m too old to be wishing away any part of the time I have left, but the 2026 midterms can’t get here fast enough.
