Letter: Light rail is too risky

By Michael Piper, Vancouver

Years ago I was an avid TriMet light rail rider living and working in Portland. It was great, especially for getting downtown. And I have been an advocate for Clark County to get light rail. But the costs seem prohibitive, and now more importantly I worry about the crime.

I have worked with several security guards who are now attached to stores in Jantzen Beach and Vancouver. They were formally working on the MAX. I never concerned myself with others who said, “those people would come across into Vancouver.” Now I do. None of the guards would work on the MAX anymore. It’s too dangerous.

City council members and C-Tran board members, I encourage you to ride the MAX from Gateway to the Expo Center to see for yourself what’s happening. Vancouver has been too slow to respond to homeless encampments and other crimes here. Do we really want to take the risk?
