Weather Eye: Chilling winds, storms as spring tries to burst forward

Contrary to my expectations, Wednesday’s weather system was rather weak, producing less than a quarter-inch of rainfall in the lowlands as of noon Wednesday. Don’t fret, frequent showers today will add more liquid into the rain gauge.

Following up on my Tuesday comments, Western Washington can expect scattered thunderstorms today, bringing the smell of ozone and the threat of hail. Blustery winds are also in the forecast. Typical March weather. It will remain on the chilly side of things for the next week or so with plenty of mountain snow.

Expect snow in our local foothills today and Friday, as the arrival of the coldest air aloft brings the chilling wind and a chance of accumulating snow. Snow levels will increase this weekend and next week, mainly accumulating on Cascade Mountain passes. Be prepared for significant snowfall if traveling through the passes.

A parade of storms will stream their way to us over the next week and all I can say is that rain is in the forecast each day. There might be steady rain or showers, but wet and cool is the theme. High temperatures will be below seasonal averages. St. Patrick’s Day looks to be on the damp side.

The Ides of March are almost upon us and although it was once not a good day for Julius Caesar, I see no great perils for us on Saturday other than more rain. Nothing new here.

Despite the cool and damp weather, spring is trying its best to burst forward with bright yellow daffodils blooming along the roadways and countryside. Leaf buds are swelling, and some brave flowering trees are showing their white and pink colors while they shiver in the brisk winds of March.

We are a week away from the official start of spring and daylight savings time is behind us so things are looking up. Yeah, these March showers will bring those April flowers, hey, I think I just got a month ahead of myself there. April showers and May flowers, right?

I always say about this time of the year, “Spring has sprung, the grass has ris’, I wonder where the birdies is?” I certainly know the grass is growing as the landscapers wake me up early each Wednesday mowing the front yard. At least I’m not behind the mower.

Take good care everyone, stay bundled up.
