WSDOT: Studded tires must be removed by March 31

Spring has sprung, which means the deadline to remove studded tires is approaching.

To avoid a potential $137 fine, studded tires must be removed by the end of March 31, according to the Washington Department of Transportation. (Oregon has the same removal deadline.)

In a press release, the agency urged people to plan ahead, given that automotive shops anticipate busy schedules before the deadline.

The Washington State Patrol will begin issuing tickets as soon as April 1.

All drivers — including visitors — must follow Washington’s motor vehicle laws in the state.

“Studded tires cause between $20 million to $29 million in damage to Washington’s state-owned roads each winter, in addition to damaging city and county roads,” WSDOT Maintenance Operations Manager James Morin said in a news release. “There are many alternative traction options available. We encourage drivers to consider non-stud, winter-tread tires, which provide excellent traction without the road damage caused by metal studs.”
