All Senate Democrats should have voted no on the Continuing Resolution. I believe in the Constitution and the separation of powers it creates, which our Founding Fathers considered so essential to preventing concentration of power in just one person. The president is acting illegally and against the U.S. Constitution, as court after court has affirmed.
Congress is also intended to be a check on the president becoming an autocrat. They know he is acting illegally, and voting yes to send him more money makes the Democrats complicit. The Republicans are already complicit in fully supporting illegal anti-Constitutional actions. The Democrats should have a spine here, not be complicit in undermining the U.S. Constitution itself. Some Democratic senators theorize that the president will do even worse things if they vote no. That is cowardice. It is appeasement. This is a moment for courage, not equivocation.
To be more specific, the executive branch is to implement the appropriations made by the Congress, with congressional oversight, according to the Constitution. This executive is not doing so.
Rep. Marie Gluesenkamp Perez, D-Skamania, had the courage and horse sense to vote no. Senate Democrats should have, too.
