DALLAS — Taylor Sheridan’s oil drama “Landman” has been renewed for a second season, Paramount+ announced Wednesday.

Inspired by the Texas Monthly podcast “Boomtown” by Christian Wallace, the series takes a close look at those in the West Texas oil industry including oil tycoons, rig workers and a crisis manager, Tommy Norris, who bridges these disparate worlds.

Billy Bob Thornton plays the chain-smoking, recovering alcoholic Tommy — who is quick to the scene of any catastrophe. For his role, Thornton was nominated for best actor in a drama series at the 82nd Golden Globe Awards (Hiroyuki Sanada of “Shogun” won).

“Landman,” which debuted in November, set viewership records for Paramount+, becoming its most-watched original series and having the most-watched global premiere of any series in the streamer’s history with 35 million viewers, according to a news release.

“‘Landman’ was one of the biggest shows of the year because of Taylor Sheridan’s unique ability to tap into the cultural zeitgeist, harnessing the Neo-western themes of rugged individualism, ambition and working-class struggles set against contemporary debates around energy, climate change and economic growth,” said Chris McCarthy, co-chief executive of Paramount Global, in the news release.

It’s the latest win (and there are many) for Sheridan, who has built a prolific and sprawling television empire since his smash hit “Yellowstone” premiered in 2018.

The Fort Worth native displays no signs of slowing down.

Currently, new episodes for Season 2 of the “Yellowstone” prequel “1923” release every Sunday on Paramount+.

In November, actress Michelle Pfeiffer was spotted in downtown Dallas during filming for the upcoming “Yellowstone” spinoff, “The Madison,” WFAA-TV reported.

Sheridan is also a producer for a new reality TV music competition series, “The Road,” where budding talents will vie for a chance to accompany Keith Urban on tour.
