Butterflies are back at the Cascade Park Community Library, where they’re guaranteed to stay beautiful — and motionless — in the entryway display case during the month of May.
Papier-mâché artist Jeff Hill, who has adopted butterfly science and art as his retirement pastime, has installed a new version of his periodic butterfly exhibit at the library. Previous butterfly exhibits by Hill, featuring his meticulous and accurate papier-mâché portrayals of Pacific Northwest butterflies, have been shown at the downtown and Cascade Park libraries in recent years.
The new exhibit focuses on the butterflies of Mount Hood. Hill said some springtime butterflies we may see at low altitudes here in Vancouver and east in the Columbia River Gorge are also found later in the season high on Mount Hood near Timberline Lodge and Mount Hood Meadows. Other butterflies are found only at that high altitude, he said.
“I have been exploring this butterfly culture (on Mount Hood) for the last three seasons,” Hill said.
