Ideas for a memorable Mother’s Day this year in Clark County

Plant sales, teas, plays, more for special lady

Mother’s Day is this Sunday, but if you haven’t yet planned anything, don’t despair. There are many goings-on scheduled around town this weekend that might please the influential women in your life. Here’s a brief list of local events from traditional garden fairs and brunches to more creative options, such as crafting and plays. Even if a few of these suggestions aren’t strictly Mother’s Day events, they may serve as inspiration for a memorable outing.

In the garden

Scented Acres Lavender Farm, 13804 N.E. 117th Ave., Vancouver, will host its annual Mother’s Day Market from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sunday featuring products by local makers and art by local artists. Guests are also encouraged to visit the farm’s nursery, lavender garden and lavender gift shop. The farm grows 19 varieties of lavender as well as salvia, monarda, coreopsis, yarrow, butterfly bushes, lobelia, echinacea, lupine and delphinium. Free parking is available on site. The Camas Plant and Garden Fair is 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday in downtown Camas. Browse plants, garden wares and outdoor art from 100 vendors. Find flowering native plants and perennials, trees and shrubs, hanging baskets and container gardens, birdhouses and bird feeders, indoor and outdoor plant starts, handmade garden art and decor, outdoor furniture, bee-friendly plants and eco-goods. Hulda Klager Lilac Gardens, 115 S. Pekin Road, Woodland, is hosting its 50th Anniversary Lilac Days from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. today through Sunday. See and smell a huge variety of blooming lilacs and buy lilac starts. Visit the barn museum and gift shop or tour the Klager farmhouse from 1-4 p.m. daily. Hulda’s birthday celebration is Saturday featuring live music with the Madrigal Singers. Admission is $10 for adults. Children ages 12 and under are free. Parking is free. The Master Gardener Mother’s Day Plant Sale is open to the public without appointments from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. Sunday at the 78th Street Heritage Farm, 1919 N.E. 78th St., Vancouver. In the studio

Kilnfolk Clay Studio, 108 W. Sixth St., Vancouver, will offer a Mother’s Day Clay Workshop from 3-4:30 p.m. Sunday. Create a mug, vase, planter or trinket dish with your mother with step-by-step instruction. Students can add personal touches with stamps and decorative techniques. Kilnfolk staff will fire each piece for pick-up in three to four weeks. Spring floral arrangements will be available to buy from Foraged & Folk Co. The cost for the workshop is $65 per person; sign up at kilnfolkclay.com.

Thiselle Creek Farm, 26903 N.E. CC Landon Road, Yacolt, will offer a Mother’s Day Marbled Coin Purse Workshop from 9 a.m. to noon Saturday. Participants age 12 and older will create leather coin purses using marbling and lacing techniques. All materials will be provided to create one coin purse per person, including leather pieces, dyes, tools and protective gear. Nonalcoholic beverages and treats will be served. Hook and Needle yarn shop, 621 Broadway, Vancouver, will offer Crafternoon, an open fiber-crafting group from noon-4 p.m. Sunday. Attendees should bring current projects to meet other fiber crafters and share ideas. If Mom is a more experienced knitter or crocheter, consider the Granny Square Market Bag Workshop at 1 p.m. Saturday ($50) or the Intarsia Workshop at 10 a.m. Saturday ($70). On the stage

Magenta Theater, 1108 Main St., Vancouver, presents the drama “Silent Sky,” based on the true story of 19th-century astronomer Henrietta Leavitt, whose pioneering work in astronomy went largely unrecognized during her lifetime. Tickets are $26 at magentatheater.com. Showtimes are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Performances continue through May 18. Starbird Theatre presents “These Shining Lives” at the Thomas Jefferson Middle School Theatre, 3000 N.W. 119th St., Vancouver. The drama is based on the true story of the women who worked at the Radium Dial Company in the 1920s, painting watch dials with radium-based paint. The women initially took pride in their work but soon developed severe health issues from the toxic exposure. Performances are 7:30 p.m. Friday and Saturday and 2 p.m. Saturday and Sunday. Tickets are $20 if purchased at starbirdtheatre.com or $22 at the door.

Metropolitan Performing Arts presents “Alice by Heart,” with showtimes at 7 p.m. Friday, 6 p.m. Saturday and 2 p.m. Sunday. Performances continue through May 25. The musical follows a young girl who takes refuge in a London tube station during WWII and confronts grief, loss, and love with her favorite book, “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland.” Tickets are $16 to $25. On the table

Willful Wine at the Grant House, 1101 Officers Row, Vancouver, will offer a Mother’s Day Tea at 2 p.m. Saturday. The traditional afternoon tea includes a selection of Steven Smith teas and a Tower of Treats with crustless tea sandwiches and savory bites, English scones with jam and cream and a variety of sweet treats. The cost is $50 per person. Willful Wine will also offer a Mother’s Day Brunch from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Sunday. The menu includes goat cheese quiche, poached pear salad, butternut squash soup, crème brulee French toast, crab cakes Benedict and red wine braised short ribs. Sweet Pea’s Tea Room, 1207 S.E. Rasmussen Blvd., Suite 107, Battle Ground, will offer a Mother’s Day Appreciation Tea at 11:30 a.m. and 3:30 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. Guests will enjoy a three-tiered tray full of traditional English teatime foods and Mother’s Day-themed desserts, a well as bottomless pots of tea. The cost is $50 per person. Dandelion Teahouse and Apothecary, 109 W. Seventh St., Vancouver, will offer a Mother’s Day Tea Tasting Party from 10:30 a.m. to noon on Sunday. Attendees will enjoy a flight of four different teas of their choosing, plus a selection of baked goods. After finishing the tasting flight, each person can enjoy a full cup of their favorite tea. Guests are also invited to browse the shop’s wares, including loose-leaf teas and tisanes, loose herbs, skin care products and art by local artists. The cost for the tea-tasting is $25 per person.
