KELSO — Mountain View freshman Alyssa Rigby has been patiently waiting her turn to don the blue, green and white of the Thunder.

After watching older brother Alex Rigby put together a decorated career on the Mountain View boys golf team, capped off with a Class 3A team state championship last spring as a senior, Alyssa Rigby looked forward to joining the Thunder’s girls golf team and begin building her own legacy.

The freshman is off to a flying start this spring.

In her first appearance at the Class 3A District 4 tournament held at Three Rivers Golf Course, Rigby won the district title Wednesday after shooting a combined 4-under 140 over two rounds, nearly 30 strokes clear of the rest of the field.

“It means a lot,” Rigby said. “I’ve seen my brother and his friends compete for the Mountain View the last four years. Watching them win district titles, watching them win as a team and also our friends winning as individuals, I wanted to see what it’s like — (to) come out here, play for Mountain View and do the same thing.”

All-Region Sports Awards Ceremony

The Columbian will be hosting its second annual All-Region Sports Awards Ceremony on Tuesday, June 3, 2025 at The Hilton Vancouver Washington.
The event will be 6-8 p.m. Admission is $15 and includes food and drink. Tickets are available now by clicking on link.

Rigby has a long list of accomplishments as a junior golfer, and last month, she teamed up with Beau Ellington to win the 2025 Arizona Women’s Four-Ball Championship as the two youngest players in the field.

With a blank slate entering her first high school postseason, Rigby opened the district tournament Tuesday with an eagle on the par-5 No. 1 hole, and was off to the races from there, carding a 3-under 69 opening round.

She managed to go under par again Wednesday with a 1-under 71, a round that included three birdies and two bogeys on the back nine.

“(I was) not rolling putts very well the first day,” Rigby said, “but reaching par 5s definitely helped with strategy and trying to hit closer wedges definitely helped a lot today.”

Kelso won the 3A team title on its home course with a combined 886, led by senior Mallory Scruggs’ third-place individual finish, and Mountain View (1104) placed second. Prairie’s Lucia Hill finished runner-up on the individual leaderboard after shooting 25-over 169. All 15 entrants in the 3A district tournament will advance to next week’s 3A bi-district tournament at Allenmore Golf Course in Tacoma.

In the 4A district tournament, Camas senior Jasmine Chen won her first district title after tying a career best round of 3-under 69 in Wednesday’s second round. Back-to-back birdies on the first two holes were tone-setters for Chen after shooting 2-over 74 Tuesday.

“It’s pretty cool, it’s a once-in-a-lifetime experience, especially since I’m not going to be here next year,” Chen said.

The senior went on to tally seven birdies Wednesday, including three in four holes to begin the back nine. The round came just two weeks after Chen set a then-career best by shooting 3-under 69 at Sun Willows Golf Course to claim medalist honors at the Pasco Invite.

“I feel like I knew the holes a little better and how to play them,” Chen said of the five-stroke improvement between Tuesday and Wednesday.

Chen paced Camas to the 4A team title with a combined 681 while Skyview (771) placed second to qualify for next week’s 4A bi-district tournament at Meadow Park Golf Course in Tacoma.

The defending 4A state champion Papermakers claimed four of the top five spots on the individual leaderboard with Reese Reiter placing second after shooting 21-over 165, Isla Lucero in taking fourth (185) and Lauryn Curley (188) finishing fifth.

“It’s been fantastic, it’s so fun. I’ve enjoyed golf more, I think (playing with Camas),” Chen said.

Battle Ground’s Ava Robertson (182) placed third to advance to bi-districts along with teammate Clella Domke-Grimm (189). Union’s Tatum Tanchuck (196) and Grace Whalen (208) also qualified for bi-districts as individuals.
