As the weather in Clark County warmed in early May 1925, the use of the Clarke County Auto Park increased, giving county commissioners hope “that the park may become self-supporting.” Three cabins had been completed at the county-owned park near 45th and Main streets and more would soon be built, offering overnight lodging to tourists. A bandstand hosted free concerts by the Mission band on Monday, Wednesday and Saturday evenings.

On May 1, 1950, the Bemis Brothers Bag Company announced eight local winners in its company-wide dressmaking competition. The contestants used Bemilin, a cotton bag material manufactured in several Bemis plants, to sew their dresses. Mrs. Thomas Bladcaller, whose dress was submitted to the national finals, won first place, Martha Brohman came in second and Mrs. William F. Gable was the third.

On May 7, 1975, Yakubu Ali, a Nigerian newspaper editor, visited Vancouver and toured The Columbian as part of Operation Crossroads Africa. Ali, associate editor of the New Nigerian, was on a six-week tour to learn about American journalism, meet staff and find new ideas to use at his paper.
