Cascade Forest Conservancy employee Suzanne Whitney rakes a layer of duff off from beneath a Ponderosa pine on Saturday, July 10, 2021, in the Gifford Pinchot National Forest near Trout Lake. The group of volunteers raked the layer off at least three feet from the base of the tree, ensuring there was no berm for wildfires to burn and leap up the trees.
