For many folks, cycling is pure joy!  With Autumn’s vibrant colors come dreams of having the wind through our helmets and the crunch of leaves under our wheels.  Trikes have made that dream a reality for thousands of Pacific Northwest cyclists.

At the October 5th Pacific TrikeFest (www.pacifictrikefest.com), folks can meet the major trike manufacturers and -more importantly- actually ride trikes!  TrikeFest will feature an enclosed outdoor riding loop and over 50 demo models from Catrike, HP Velotechnik and Sun Seeker -including adaptive and electric trikes.

One lucky attendee will leave with more than just dreams: a randomly-drawn ticket holder will win a Catrike Eola!

Pedals and wheels are about all that trikes have in common with traditional upright bikes.  As the name says, three wheels make trikes both stable to ride and easy to get on and off.  And, the pain and discomfort of upright bike seats vanishes in trikes’ super-comfortable and fully-adjustable hammocks -taking all the pressure off necks, backs, wrists, shoulders and, uh, “seats”.

Because many of the common injuries and disabilities keeping many from upright cycling are often easily solved with a trike, pretty much everyone can ride! For folks living with Parkinson’s or MS, recovering from Stroke or knee/hip replacement, living with balance issues or back pain -or even those just uncomfortable with upright bike seats- trikes create a powerful platform for a wide range of accessibility technologies. The leaned-back seating position takes pressure of joints and back. Special components include custom pedals easing range of motion for knees, hips and ankles. For those unable to use one side of their body, steering and shifting can be controlled from either left or right side. E-Trikes provide fun adventure for folks living with partial paralysis or amputation.

All this comfort doesn’t mean these vehicles are only for the sidewalks. Off Roading isn’t just possible on a trike, but a lot of fun! With suspension in the front wheels and a traditional Rockshox on the back wheel, the ride is surprisingly smooth. These trikes can truly be built around any condition. If you need certain components to be electric, from the power to the gear shifting, they can be easily added.

Pacific TrikeFest 2019 will be at PCC’s Sylvania Campus (12000 SW 49th Ave, Portland, OR) on Saturday October 5th. The event runs from 8 in the morning until 5 at night. Admission for the event is just $6 and if you buy your tickets in advance online.

If you’re not able to make the October 5th event, you can stop by RecumbentPDX’s shop on SE Hawthorne Boulevard where you’ll meet riders whose determination inspires us all. Owners Janet and Mel help customers find the trike that is right for them and make sure you are comfortable riding before you leave the store. If you’re looking for variety, RecumbentPDX offers the broadest selection of test recumbents and finished inventory west of the Mississippi. Because of their unmatched selection, they often have visitors from out of state. Why not stop in and see what the hype is about? The facility is fully wheelchair accessible… just like the trikes!
