Kafiex owner trains to become U.S. champion in barista competition

Seidy Selivanow won first place in a March qualifying competition in Denver, making her the top-ranked barista on the West Coast. She’s aiming to beat 35 other competitors at the U.S. Coffee Championship in Portland on April 22 and 23. A win for Selivanow would earn her a spot to represent the United States in the worldwide competition. She’d be the least-experienced barista in the U.S. to achieve that honor.

Forestry experts outline recovery efforts for hundreds of acres burned in Nakia Creek Fire

Columbian environment reporter Lauren Ellenbecker and photographer Taylor Balkom visited a logging site in the Nakia Creek Fire burn zone in June 2023. Logging the burned trees is the first step in recovering the land, according to forestry experts. No one has ever been charged in association with the fire, though law enforcement released a video showing persons of interest in the case in 2022. Courtney Ligman fell into addiction after losing her housing and being isolated in an abusive relationship. But a permanent spot in Vancouver, Washington's first Safe Stay Community — a pallet shelter group called The Outpost in the city's Image neighborhood — helped Ligman get back on her feet. “They have everybody for everything. If it’s a mental health crisis, if it’s a drug crisis, whatever it is. Because there’s a lot of people in crisis out there, and they do have somebody that can help you,” she said. Now she's sober, employed and looking for permanent housing for herself and her dog.

Family boat Corahleen returns to water after restoration

Rick Bishoprick’s father and grandfather built the Corahleen and launched her in 1957. But since 1994, Corahleen has sat on a trailer, parked in Washougal and Ridgefield as it slowly underwent repairs, work done mostly by Bishoprick and his dad. After Stan Bishoprick died in 2013, Rick took on the restoration effort.
