After narrowly winning election in 2006, Sherry Parker has announced another bid for Clark County clerk this year.
Parker, a Democrat, made her formal announcement to run for re-election Saturday at the Clark County Democratic Convention.
Parker, who turned 63 last month, is no stranger to the court system. Before taking over the clerk position from Jo Anne McBride, Parker was a courtroom deputy clerk for seven years and a juvenile court secretary for eight years.
Parker wants to continue her vision for expanding the court system’s technology, and said she’s already made significant bounds helping the court run efficiently on a tight budget.
“With the economy the way it is and the county’s budget the way it is, we try to find any way we can to make things more efficient and still be available to the public,” Parker said Friday.
Parker narrowly defeated Republican Baine Wilson in 2006. One of her major donors was Local 48 of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers. Her husband, Philip Parker, is a member of the local.
Since taking office, Parker has helped streamline procedures for processing paperwork to a computer imaging system and digitizing old court files from microfilm. She’s also helped develop a more robust Web site and a faster way for the public to access documents by e-mail.
If re-elected, she said, her goal is to “just continue to make it easier to get people access to documents and in the courts,” she said.
As a clerk, Parker supervises a staff of 45 people and is responsible for the records of all Superior Court matters, including felony criminal cases; certain civil lawsuits; and divorce, juvenile and probate cases. She earns $93,312 a year.
Parker holds a bachelor’s degree in education from the University of South Florida and an associate’s degree in data processing from Clark College. She sits on the Board of Trustees of Clark College.
She lives in Battle Ground with her husband. They have two grown sons and three grandchildren.
