New program offers alternatives to eviction

If you’re a renter at risk of eviction or need legal advice regarding landlord-tenant conflicts, a new, free program is here to help.

The Housing Justice Project, which provides legal assistance to low-income tenants, education about landlord-tenant law and other resources to resolve disagreements and avoid homelessness, has just opened for business.

It’s a stimulus grant-funded collaboration between Community Mediation Services and the Clark County Volunteer Lawyers Program. The aim is to prevent tenants from becoming homeless. The program is offering a weekly advice clinic with a volunteer attorney; participants will learn about their legal rights and about how to prepare for court.

Advice clinics will be held 10 a.m. to noon on Thursday mornings. Qualifying tenants must schedule an appointment in advance. There’s the possibility that tenants can have an attorney represent them in court as well as the possibility of resolving problems through mediation.

For information about the Housing Justice Project, call 360-334-4007; for information about mediation, call 360-619-1151.
