HOUSTON (AP) — Third seeded Sam Querry defeated Wayne Odesnik 7-6 (4), 1-6, 7-5 in the semifinals of the U.S. Men’s Clay Court Championships on Saturday.

Odesnik pleaded guilty on March 26 to taking vials of human growth hormone into Australia. He has denied taking the banned substance and is playing while his case is being investigated by the International Tennis Federation.

Odesnik was fined $7,000 in an Australian court and could face a suspension.

Querry made it clear prior to the match he disapproved of Odesnik.

Odesnik, who lost in the finals of last year’s tournament to Australia’s Lleyton Hewitt, forced the match to the end and Querry had to overcome his inconsistent serve to complete the match by breaking Odesnik in the final game.
