SANTA CLARA, Calif. (AP) — Nat Borchers scored for Real Salt Lake with three minutes left in extra time to send the match to penalty kicks and RSL coverted all five tries in a 4-3 victory Wednesday against the San Jose Earthquakes in U.S. Open Cup qualifying.

Will Johnson, Kyle Beckerman, Robbie Findley, Robbie Russell and Andy Williams all scored for RSL.

Joey Gjertsen, Brandon McDonald and Ramon Sanchez converted for San Jose, but Arturo Alvarez’s miss proved decisive.

Real Salt Lake will face either FC Dallas or D.C. United next month, with the winner of that match earning a berth in the full U.S. Open Cup field. The MLS is only allowed eight spots in the 40-team tournament.

San Jose scored three consecutive goals and appeared in position to win thanks to Justin Morrow’s goal in the 103rd minute.
