That morning, we were on our way to Long Beach with our kids, Kellie and Jerry Brower.
At about 8:35 a.m., we were driving by the Ridgefield Junction weigh station on I-5. We saw a small plume at Mount St. Helens. As we watched it grow, we decided it had to be THE eruption!
We turned on the radio and surfed all the stations trying to see if anything was on the news. Nothing was being said.
We kept switching stations, and finally we heard an announcement that they were receiving reports of an eruption at Mount St. Helens. We passed directly by it as it happened.
We continued to watch with amazement until it was out of sight.
On the way back home later that day, my husband, Joel, pulled into Wimpy’s Restaurant on I-5, and we sat there and watched it a while. The memory is still very vivid to this day.
