This year’s version of the Clark County Law Enforcement Memorial Day will have a distinctly local feel, coming on the heels of seven police deaths in Washington in 2009.

Organized by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, the May 13 ceremony will recognize those officers and call out the names of eight killed in Clark County in the line of duty.

First Gentleman Michael Gregoire, Monroe Police Department Sgt. Brian Johnston, who serves as the vice president of the “Behind the Badge Foundation,” and Clark County Commission Chair Steve Stuart are scheduled to speak during the National Police Week event at 11 a.m. at the Public Plaza Service Center, 1300 Franklin Street.

Similar ceremonies are being held throughout the country, including Washington, DC, where the names of more than 320 slain officers will be read aloud, including 125 killed in 2009.

National Police Week was established in 1962 by President John F. Kennedy and a joint resolution of Congress to pay tribute to law enforcement officers who have lost their lives for the safety and protection of others.
