BEREA, Ohio (AP) — The Cleveland Browns made one last-ditch effort to pry the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft away from the St. Louis Rams with a trade.

Browns president Mike Holmgren says he made a phone call to the Rams 20 minutes before the draft began on Thursday and offered a package to the Rams, who selected Oklahoma quarterback Sam Bradford first overall. Holmgren says he made the offer to Rams general manager Billy Devaney “at the limits of what I was willing to do.”

Holmgren says Devaney “finally said we’re going to take him (Bradford).

Holmgren would not specify what he offered the Rams. The Browns eventually selected Texas quarterback Colt McCoy in the third round.
