Our readers’ views on the Aug. 17 primary

18th District representative

Jon Russell regularly demonstrates a rare thing in an elected official — common sense. As a Washougal city councilman, Russell has trimmed his city’s budget, successfully battled political corruption and liberal agendas, lowered taxes to help local businesses create jobs, and stood up for our country’s rule of law with his strong stand against illegal immigration. Russell is clearly the best person with the best record.

I heard Ann Rivers speak and I appreciate that she felt like a steward for our tax dollars, rather than expecting that the poor taxpayers will fund anything and everything. The Legislature has never been this creative at increasing taxes and we need Rivers to stick up for the taxpayers. I know she is prepared to do so. She is smart, savvy and eloquent and will be an excellent representative for all of us.

Dennis Kampe has lived in and served the people of the district for 40 years. For the last 19 years, he has been director of the Clark County Skills Center. He led the skills center to being named one of the best schools in the U.S. by Business Week magazine. His primary focus is jobs and the economy. He pledges to support the middle class and seniors in Olympia. His primary focus is jobs and the economy. He believes in a limited, efficient, and responsible government.

17th District representative

Monica Stonier is the candidate who understands the issues and needs of public education. She understands the need to get new businesses started and existing businesses growing. She understands that an educated work force is not a choice but a necessity. Stonier will work to gain taxpayer support for education by being the voice for students and families. She understands that money should come from cutting lower priority areas and not from increased taxes. Stonier is the right choice at the right time.

Vancouver City Council

Do not cut firemen. Do not cut policemen. Do not cut public safety. The only Vancouver City Council member who speaks for me is Bart Hansen. Hansen is the only council member farsighted enough to understand the impact to real people when/if the city reduces the number of public safety personnel and/or the number of fire stations. Only Hansen is listening.

Clark County prosecutor

I had the opportunity to meet with Brent Boger, candidate for Clark County Prosecutor. Boger discussed how he can better protect our constitutional rights, be tougher on crime, curtail identity theft, prevent the release of homeless sex offenders, and fight to eliminate wasteful spending of taxpayer dollars. I am excited about Boger working as our prosecutor. Join me in electing him.

The prosecuting attorney’s office needs a person with a lot of skill in criminal law. The office also needs somebody with high degree of integrity — Tony Golik is that candidate. Golik is the only candidate who has prosecuted criminals. As a law enforcement officer, I can say definitively that Golik is the best candidate for Clark County prosecutor.

Clark County assessor

Peter Van Nortwick is a committed conservative and God knows in this era of tax-and-spend liberals, we need a committed conservative. Van Nortwick is a candidate who has actually appraised homes, buildings and farms. When elected, he is committed to freeze the assessor’s budget until it is in line with other Washington state counties. Isn’t it time we had a professional appraiser who just happens to be the only true conservative in the race?

3rd District U.S. Rep

Denny Heck’s credentials exceed every candidate for national office in Clark County history: the youngest person from our community elected to the state Legislature, chief clerk of the House of Representatives, chief of staff to Gov. Booth Gardner, co-founder of TVW (state’s equivalent to C-Span), and then a highly successful business career. What greater breadth of experience could be sought for a candidate? I’m expecting he’ll do well serving us in Washington, D.C., as he has in every other aspect of his life and career.

Southwest Washington is an incredible place to live, but our district needs a new representative who can help revive its economy and support small businesses. We deserve the leadership of Jaime Herrera. I am a student, studying out of district, and the only thing that I can see preventing me from moving back after graduation is the lack of jobs. I trust that Herrera will be a strong voice in Congress and help restore the economic vitality of the place I hope to always call home.

This year, in the race for Congress, I will not vote for who the party says can beat the Democrats or who raises the most money. I will vote for who I believe will do the best job. I will vote for who best represents the beliefs I share and who is not afraid to actually say what he believes. We don’t need a moderate who is just right of center. We don’t need someone who will tell you what you want to hear. We already have that. I am voting for David Hedrick, a real Republican, a real conservative.

U.S. Senate

Professional legislators are elected by high-paid lobbyists, powerful unions and big-money. It should be obvious that term limits should be an objective for all voters. We have 16 choices (15 candidates and 1 write-in) for the position of Washington state’s U.S. Senator. Voters should consider casting their vote for an individual who carries the most potential for unseating a professional legislator and in my humble opinion, this person is Dino Rossi.

Washington Court of Appeals

God forbid you ever need the Court of Appeals. If you do, you do not want another Superior Court Judge to review the decision. You need someone like Joseph Daggy to stand up and impartially review the decision. Daggy has no political or personal agenda. He has 30 years experience knowing and presenting the law to the courts. Please elect Joseph Daggy to the Court of Appeals.
