OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) — The Thurston County coroner says a homicide victim found in the passenger seat of a pickup truck pulled over near Tenino, Wash., was a 60-year-old New York woman who moved to the area in March.

Coroner Gary Warnock said Tuesday that Vanda Boone died from having her throat slit and also suffered asphyxia and blunt force injuries to her head and neck. She previously lived in Long Island City, N.Y.

Karin Olsen of Radiance Herbs and Massage in Olympia says Boone was a massage therapist there.

The driver pulled over Sunday night was identified as 26-year-old Bernard K. Howell of Tenino. At a court appearance Monday, he was ordered held on $750,000 bail for investigation of second-degree murder.

Sheriff’s Lt. Chris Mealy says the driver told officers he found the body and was trying to save the family the cost of a funeral.
