JOINT BASE LEWIS-McCHORD, Wash. (AP) — The chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff says the military is shifting its focus from fighting wars in Iraq and Afghanistan to helping the soldiers who fought them.

The News Tribune says Adm. Mike Mullen visited Joint Base Lewis-McChord south of Tacoma on Monday and spoke to several hundred troops. The News Tribune says he told them he wants to be sure that service members get the help they need to make a successful transition from deployment.

About 18,000 service members are returning from war zones this year to Lewis-McChord. That will swell the base’s population to 35,000, the most since before Sept. 11, 2001.
