SPOKANE, Wash. (AP) — A tentative contract agreement reached early Wednesday has averted a one-day strike by union hospital workers in the Spokane area.

The Spokesman-Review says the deal covers 950 workers at Deaconess Medical Center and Valley Hospital, both owned by Community Health Systems Inc. The Service Employees International Union had called for the strike to begin at 7 a.m. Wednesday if no agreement was reached.

Details of the tentative pact have not been released. Workers are expected to vote on it later this week. The two sides have been negotiating since December 2008.
