NORTH BEND, Ore. (AP) — Oregon environmental authorities have fined an oyster farm on Coos Bay nearly $25,000 over violations of wastewater regulations from their oyster shucking operation.
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality said Tuesday that Clausen Oysters in North Bend ran its shucking plant without a wastewater permit for four years.
When they did get the permit, officials said, the company did not sample and analyze their wastewater for bacteria or run it through a filter to remove waste before discharging into the bay.
Steve Nichols of DEQ says without the reporting required by the permit, they have no way of knowing what kind of harm the wastewater may be causing in Coos Bay.
Owner Lilli Clausen did not immediately return a telephone call for comment.
