SEATTLE (AP) — Seattle libraries will be closed Monday, and they won’t reopen until the day after Labor Day.

Officials say closing 27 public libraries for a week will save $650,000, mostly from not paying 650 employees.

KUOW reports the furlough is part of a plan to cut $3 million from this year’s library budget. The system also has reduced hours, cut book acquisitions and trimmed administrative costs.

No overdue fines will accrue while libraries are closed.
