A 28-year-old woman was blasted in the face Monday by acid or some other noxious substance after a brief conversation with an unknown female who approached her.

The victim has been identified as Bethany Storro. She was attacked at West Eighth and Columbia streets, in the area of Esther Short Park, according to police. Vancouver police were called to the scene about 7:15 p.m. Monday.

Storro told police it was a black female who threw the contents of a cup into her face that burned her skin. Storro was wearing sunglasses at the time and it did not appear the unknown liquid got into her eyes, police said.

Detectives from the Vancouver Police Department’s Major Crimes Unit planned to interview Storro today and hope to develop a more complete suspect description.

Storro is in serious condition at Portland’s Legacy Emanuel Medical Center, which operates a burn center.

“Thank you for all of your thoughts and prayers,” Storro said in a statement released through the hospital. “I appreciate all of the well wishes being sent my way. I do ask, if anyone should know the woman who assaulted me, please contact the Vancouver Police.”

Officer Dave Chamblee said he’d heard of no previous such cases in Vancouver.

Anyone with information on this incident is asked to call Vancouver Police Major Crimes Detective Wally Stefan at 360-487-7425.
