MEDFORD, Ore. (AP) — Drug-trade violence in Mexico has some Mexicans living in southern Oregon worried.

Monica Perez is a manager at La Placita, an eight-store mini-mall on West Main Street in Medford.

The 38-year-old Perez told the Mail Tribune newspaper she has lived in Oregon for 14 years after growing up in Zamora, one of the most dangerous regions in Mexico.

Perez says she fears the drug cartels have gained the upper hand over the Mexican government through force, coercion or bribery — and can reach into the United States, including Oregon.

She isn’t alone in her concerns. The Jackson County sheriff’s office recently declined to name two deputies who shot and killed a Mexican man guarding a marijuana garden in order to help protect them against possible reprisals by a cartel.
