Community notebook: At least 3 area clubs reach soccer finals

The Columbian
Published: December 7, 2010, 12:00am

A Westside Huskies girls team and a pair of Vancouver United boys teams will be among the youth soccer teams playing for state championships this week at the Starfire Sports Complex in Tukwila.

Washington Youth Soccer’s Recreation Cup state tournament concludes with championship games on Saturday and Sunday. This is the state tournament for recreation-level teams that play in local leagues during the fall.

There might be more teams from Southwest Washington in the final matches scheduled for Dec. 11-12. Southwest Washington was represented in each of the nine age divisions for boys and girls during the elimination phase on Dec. 4-5. Many of those teams did not report their results to The Columbian, and Washington Youth Soccer did not have tournament results available on Monday.

The VUSA Jets advanced to the boys under-18 final by beating Harbor FC Stallions 2-0 in Sunday’s semifinal. Sean Minor and Ian Posey scored for the Jets, who split two pool-play games on Saturday.

The Westside Huskies will play at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday for the girls under-18 division championship. They advanced to the finals with a pair of draws during the four-team elimination day on Dec. 4 in Everett. The Huskies have made the recreation-level state tournament seven years in a row. They won the under-11 state title in 2004, and were state cup runners up in the under-16 division last fall.

RJ Walkins, an assistant coach for the Huskies, also plays for the VUSA Storm boys under-19 team that will play for a state title at 1:30 p.m. on Sunday.
