ROSEBURG, Ore. (AP) — Oregon State Police say a pickup truck driver speeding away from police on Interstate 5 died in a crash Wednesday night.

Lt. Gregg Hastings says investigators think the man was involved in a hit and run collision northbound on I-5 in the Roseburg area. When a Sutherlin officer saw the pickup on the freeway about 15 minutes later and tried to stop it, Hastings says the driver raced off at speeds close to 80 mph.

Shortly before 8 p.m., a Douglas County sheriff’s officer parked his car on the northbound freeway shoulder and got out to deploy some spike strips. Hastings says the approaching pickup smashed into the back of the deputy’s car. The deputy managed to get out of the way. The unidentified male driver was dead on arrival at a Cottage Grove hospital.
