PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — The TriMet board approved a $127 million contract Wednesday to start construction of the so-called Caruthers Bridge on the Willamette River.

The Oregonian reports the Portland-to-Milwaukie light rail bridge will be the nation’s largest no-automobile span. Only trains, buses, streetcars, pedestrians and bicyclists will be able to use the 1,720-foot bridge when it opens in September 2015.

It will be the centerpiece of the $1.5 billion 7-mile MAX Orange Line.
