A landslide 1.3 miles south of Ridgefield on the BNSF Railway tracks was cleared about 2 p.m. Sunday, allowing freight trains to run.

However, BNSF has closed the tracks to Amtrak passenger trains until about 4:30 a.m. Tuesday, said Gus Melonas, spokesman for BNSF.

The slide happened at 6:30 p.m. Saturday when 5 feet of mud, debris and a tree cascaded onto about 75 feet of the tracks.

One track was opened within an hour, Melonas said, with the other cleared Sunday afternoon.

On its website, Amtrak advised that the route from Vancouver to Seattle is suspended, with alternate transportation being planned.

Service is being offered from Portland to Eugene, the website said.

“Passengers are encouraged to call 800-USA-RAIL or visit Amtrak.com for schedule information and train status updates,” the website said.

Melonas said heavy rains also caused a slide near Tacoma about 4:30 a.m. Sunday that closed the line.

Amtrak trains running north of Seattle also are suspended until Tuesday morning.

In the Columbia River Gorge, late Saturday night, boulders the size of cars rolled onto the tracks, closing the track between Lyle and Wishram for two hours, Melonas said.

Near Ridgefield, Melonas said crews worked overnight to clear the second track.

He said a 60-foot tree with a 36-inch diameter came down with the mud onto the tracks.

There were no injuries.

Melonas said BNSF officials will continue to monitor slopes this week as more rain is predicted. He noted that freight trains are moving. BNSF owns the tracks.
