SEATTLE (AP) — Passenger train traffic is resuming Tuesday through Seattle.
Burlington Northern Santa Fe is lifting a 48-hour safety moratorium imposed over the weekend after mudslides hit tracks in several places during heavy rains in Western Washington.
Spokesman Gus Melonas says Amtrak and Sounder commuter trains were cleared to travel south of Seattle at 4:30 a.m. Tuesday. The moratorium on passenger trains north of Seattle is being lifted at 8 a.m. except north of the Canadian border. Slides are still being evaluated in Canada, but Melonas says the line could open later Tuesday.
BNSF freight trains are running. Railroad crews continue to monitor tracks for washouts and slides.
