EUGENE, Ore. (AP) — A man wounded by Eugene police after a report of shots fired in a mall parking lot is hospitalized in critical condition.

On Thursday, police identified the man as 27-year-old Michael Thomas Mason. KVAL-TV says he’s the son of a former Eugene police sergeant who retired in 2003.

The Register-Guard reports Mason is an Army veteran who served tours in Afghanistan.

Police have identified the officers who fired Wednesday as Sgt. Bill Solesbee and Officer Marcus Pope.

Officers responding to a report of shots fired in the Valley River Center parking area were provided with a name and vehicle description for the shooter. No one was injured there but two cars were hit. Police Chief Pete Kerns says officers located the vehicle and tried to negotiate, but the driver’s behavior was unpredictable and he didn’t respond to the officers’ instructions.
