EVERETT, Wash. (AP) — An Everett man who fatally stabbed his 64-year-old landlady has been found criminally insane and ordered back to a state mental hospital.
On Thursday, Snohomish County Superior Court Judge Thomas Wynne found that Steven Well was not sane at the time of Judy Garcia’s July death and therefore was not legally responsible for his actions.
The 59-year-old Well had been charged with second-degree murder.
The Daily Herald reports Wynne ordered the man back to Western State Hospital for an indefinite period.
Well’s record shows he has been living with schizophrenia for more than three decades. Doctors recently concluded he likely wasn’t on a therapeutic level of his medication last summer. Well was hospitalized for about 20 years after stabbing another landlady in 1980. She survived.
