PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) — A Portland police spokesman says two officers fired at a man who pointed a realistic-looking fake gun at them in an apartment building. The man was later found dead.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says the officers were responding to a 911 call early Friday about a man reportedly threatening people with a 9mm handgun.

Simpson says the officers knocked on the man’s door, he opened the door and pointed a gun at them and they fired. The spokesman says officers temporarily lost sight of the man, who was later found dead. He was identified as 45-year-old Darryel Dwayne Ferguson.

Police found a replica handgun in the apartment. Simpson says it looks and feels like a real firearm.

The officers have been placed on paid administrative leave. They have not yet been identified.

An autopsy on Ferguson is scheduled for Saturday.
