A recent run of daytime burglaries has the Vancouver Police Department urging residents to keep doors and windows locked and participate in neighborhood watch programs.

In advance of Christmas, police warn that presents stacked near windows beckon would-be burglars. It is important to secure sliding doors, in particular, because a burglar who has snuck around the back of a house can use it as cover to enter and exit the dwelling.

“Thieves will strike any time of the day or night if they believe the opportunity presents itself,” said a press release issued by the police department.

Neighborhood or block-watch entities can be formal or informal, police say, emphasizing that it’s important to have neighbors watching out for each other. Suspicious activity should be reported to 911, according to the bulletin.
